Fremantle

Dates: 17/02/20 – 21/02/20

After a while in central Perth I made the trip about half an hour out of town to Fremantle. I’d heard some good stuff about that area. They even had a hostel in a former prison which seemed cool. So of course I had to go out there. What met me when I got there was a small and calm little town with what seemed as a massive industry along their coast. The strange thing about the coastline and the docks was that you wouldn’t realize they were there unless you actually knew. Nothing around town gave away that there was something happening at that side of the tracks. I mostly spent my days there just wandering and exploring downtown. Not to forget the long and totally unplanned bike adventure. One of the days in Fremantle was spent going out to Rottnest Island. So I didn’t spend that much time over there. I did of course make sure to visit Little Creatures Brewing for something else than a bike. They did not disappoint.

Even if I just spent a short time in Fremantle it sure was a good one.

Thank you Perth!

Dates: 11/02/20 – 17/02/20

My adventure in Australia started when I landed on the West coast in Perth. Expectation wise I wasn’t sure what to prepare for. All I knew was that I at least had a bed for the night (we all know how that worked out…). Except for the kinda hard start it turned out for the better as the adventure progressed. Just the fact that I was lucky enough to catch a festival going around the area was great. My days were just spent wandering around the area, exploring and trying to catch the feel of the area. Northbridge was a fun and urban area to start in. With the Fringe festival going on the area just had a wonderful feeling to it. I managed to catch two football (soccer) games, a bunch of buskers, good beer, some different cultural input and a long exploring walk around town. Pretty much satisfied!

The whole time in Perth was cut a bit short when I got the chance for a Workaway just outside of Darwin. More about that later.

Overall the first week-ish was great. Could always have spent more time but I got restless and the craving for adventuring hit me hard. So I got on a plane and left for Darwin, NT.

Perth Central Backpackers

Most of this post has been put down every now and then so I’m sorry about the mess…

11.02.2020
After a long trip down to Perth I managed to book the cheapest hostel available online. I’ll admit it, seeing the room kinda made regret it. I’ve been to some hostels around the world but this is just bad even for me. The reception closed before I even got here so it seems like there is no one working here from around 20 to 08. I had emailed them in advance about my late check-in but all the info I got concerned how to get it, not how to set up here. When I finally found my room there was no marked bed or locker. The lockers were worn down, it was even a note about selling a padlock but there was nowhere to put it… There was even old cigarette butts in one of the lockers. No info about sheets or anything I had to just wing the whole thing. To top the whole thing of some random dude sleeping in what was supposed to be my bed. At least I could find a WiFi so I could nag here. Instead of sleeping in on a pretty basic bed I grabbed a couch. As expected the couch was too short for me but I managed to catch some unstable hours of sleep in the end.

Here comes the boom! I arrived back here at around 22 and there seems to be a nightclub just below us. As if my last wasn’t bad enough this could possibly be worse.

Only way to try to finish this up is with a somewhat conclusion on the hostel. I won’t say it’s shit but you should just be prepared for the standard. You do get what you pay for or maybe not even that. If you only need a bed in a central location and can sleep in a load of noise you’ll be good. If you need something more just stay away. It’s dirty from time to time. The balcony is mostly just for smoking weed. Trying to find a basic knife for your food can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Good thing is that the bathrooms are private and most of the people are great. Will I come back? If I have to, probably.

Soccer in Perth!

My time in Perth was extremely bad planned for watching some sports so after searching far and wide I finally found something I could spend my time on. I’m used to watching atleast 5+ games of soccer in a week on several occasions so now I was in a dire need to catch a game! The plan was to try and catch a Perth Glory game but the male team wasn’t playing and I didn’t bother spending 15$ on a womens game so I took a slow start to the day and instead headed up towards Dorrien Gardens in the afternoon to catch some lower league games. Appearantly they had something called Women’s NPL Night Series that was played as 2 games in a row at the same stadium for only one ticket. Or to be fair I couldn’t find an ATM on my way there and the kiosk at the stadium wouldn’t let me withdraw any cash so I kinda snook in… Saved me a fiver at least!

The first game was between Murdoch University Melville FC and Subiaco AFC. MUMFC was controlling the whole first half. It was so bad that they could pretty much played without a goalie. Second half changed completely. SAFC was pressing and took control from the start of the half. It got so bad that that the coach of MUMFC took a good old “big grandpa Wengz” on his water bottle. As expected the ref didn’t see it… Towards the end MUMFC got 2 quick goals, one of them was sheer brilliance to win the game.

The second game was a bit more open but Perth SC seemed to always be just below the level of Northern Redbacks. Both teams were pressing hard the whole game but NR just used their chances better than PSC. In my opinion the result of 4-1 for NR isn’t the perfect way to tell how the game was. But sometimes a result is a result and there’s nothing you can do with it!

Even if it wasn’t a pair of top level games it was a fun experience to be able to check of another country to my list of football stadiums. Will I try to do something similar again? Of course I will! As long as the ball is somewhat round I’m going for it!

Fremantle coastline on wheels!

I’d never thought most of my day would be spent on a bicycle when I got up this morning. After breakfast and such I decided to try to explore this area. Because of the long coastline just walking would take too long so I decided to try to find a place to borrow a ride. The tourist information had a limited time you could rent a bike for and I would have to pay a safety deposit which would take ages to return and such. Still, the lady behind the counter advised me to find a brewery that had bike for hire. So of course I did. You don’t have to ask me twice if I want to visit a brewery! After a small walk through parts of the town I found it! Got myself a bike, a way too small helmet and off I went! What was supposed to be a short look around town turned out to be a around 22km+ (have to add in when I got lost) trip down passed Cockburn (still cracks me up, sorry) and further on. A fun little day trip exploring. Thank you for the bike Little Creatures Brewing!

IE Tour Net

This is a bit of non-profit commercial but I just have to. I was looking all over for the cheapest way to get to Rottnest Island and some prices were insanely high. Just by luck I saw a small paper hanging on the bulletin board at Perth Central Backpackers for a company called IE Tours Net. I decided to check it out and was not disappointed by it! My only problem was that I hadn’t picked up a local simcard so calling was a bit hard. Instead of making a big deal out of it I got up this morning went down to the train station in hope to catch a train that would fit with reaching him as soon as he started his day.

I’ll admit it that the Facebook page and everything looked a tiny bit sketchy but as Rami himself said:”It’s better to gain a reputation within people than online. One friend tell another friend and so it goes”. Having to pay cash was also a bit strange but Rami gave me the proper reason for. There were so many different fees with a machine like that so it would just be easier to send people down to the ATM.

To conclude all this I’d say he seems like the best in the area. His done whatever he can to keep the price as low as possible and has a proper reason to every “strange” thing he’s done making it happen. If I were to book anything in this area again I’d talk to him instantly! Now all we have to see is if Rottnest Island lives up to the hype…

First few days

13.02.20
So, there has been a few days since I arrived here in Perth now. My start wasn’t as good as I hoped when I got to the hostel. More about that when I get out of this one. Other than that it’s fun. The people staying here are great. So far I’ve only checked out the area around Northbridge. There’s a lot going on here with a huge arts festival so wednesday night was spent in a tiny “hidden park” here with a small concert and a anime movie. I have of course checked out the local “Macca” for the Aussie special, some brekkie burger, not something to write home about (still here I am doing it). Perth seems to be a pretty cultural city and apperantly it’s supossed to a have a fairly okay beerscene which will partly be my task today.
I once warned you about that this blog MIGHT be a bit strange with media and such. This post will have that kind of strange to it. When I come across a good busker I have to stop. So yesterday I did so. Check him out below!

Is Someone You Loved the next Wonderwall?

Qatar Airways

The mile-high bar! I have had a few long distance trips with different airlines in the last few years, but this was a great surprise! Just to be clear nothing beats bad whiskey in a papercup on a plane with a bunch of religious people (thank you Turkish Airlines). For a long distance traveller few things beat the feeling of being able to just put on a movie with a drink. The fact that every serving had the option of a free choice of drinks makes up for the somewhat bad legroom (and the ****** in front that just threw his seat back). Missing a different choice of beer in addition to the classic Heineken but it’s a safe choice. Whiskey Sour was neither whiskey nor sour so that’s a lessoned learned. The full service of Qatar Airways from being greeted at check in to leaving the plane at my destination was a pure joy. Everyone was just trying to be the best and as a passenger you could feel it. There were smiles all the way from Oslo to Perth! The only thing to keep in mind: it is possible to fuck up even a GT… After this trip I’m happy that they are flying me home in a few months.

The smell of a GT as you start a long journey 💛

Here we go…

I woke up this morning to a rainy cold day. It might have been my hometown making sure I won’t miss it THAT much, but who knows. Now it’s finally time for a much needed adventure. The reason for the need you can find somewhere on this page. Or maybe I’ll post it here sometime in the future. Anyway, this is my first post here so it’s probably time to share what this is all about. Life took some good and some bad turns, mostly bad. I came to the point where I had to somewhat decide my own fortune in life. So all of a sudden I had applied for a Australian Visa. And before I knew it I had booked some flights. At the time of writing this I’m on a plane heading from Bodo to Oslo as a part of 3 legged trip to Perth, Australia. For the next 4 months I’ll be traveling around Australia in a possibly not so typical way for most people. If you want to follow my adventure watch this space for the time to come. This can either go really well or tits-up, we’ll see. I hope you’ll join me on this adventure.

Just a heads-up in case I come out as normal in the text above I’m not… This site is not completely finished and will possibly change it looks from time to time. The posts can be completely random with different kinds of media in them. Make sure you are not too uncomfortable with it and this might be the place for you. Good luck.
